The flower is drooping, long-stalked, with six narrow greenish yellow (rarely pink) petals, rather like a sea star in appearance, and yields a highly fragrant essential oil. Dwarf ylang-ylang, grows as small tree or compact shrub with highly scented flowers. Its clusters of black fruit are an important food item for birds.

Ylang ylang is known for its ability to slow down over-rapid breathing and over-rapid heart beat. These symptoms are usually associated with shock, anxiety and anger.

The formula for the above conditions is to mix five drops of Ylang Ylang with five drops Sweet Almond oil or any other light carrier oil.  Dampen a handkerchief with the liquid and inhale slowly and deeply.

Ylang ylang has proven beneficial for treating PMS, especially associated with extreme mood swings that occur just before the onset of menstruation.
